‘Big Wyoming,’ the ‘Cowboy State,’ known for Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. It’s the ninth-largest state by area, but also the least populous and second-least dense. So, how does its sparse population and mountainous regions affect its drivers?

In our 2018 national state driving study, Wyoming ranked 16th-worst. So, our team at QuoteWizard decided to see where the best and worst in the state reside.

We analyzed QuoteWizard data from tens of thousands of insurance quotes from Wyoming to see where the best and worst drivers live. To determine overall driver quality in Wyoming, we studied drivers in Wyoming’s 20 largest cities who used QuoteWizard.com to compare quotes. We then ranked cities by the highest rate of incidents. Incidents include accidents, speeding tickets, DUIs and moving citations from that data.

Buffalo

Sorry, Buffalo, you are the worst driving city in Wyoming. Buffalo is located in the northern point of Interstate 25, joining Interstate 90 right at the base of the Bighorn Mountain. Johnson County had 58.85 fatalities per 100,000 people, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That is the 2nd-highest per county in the state after Corbon County, with 78.42.

Gillette

Centrally located in the development of coal, oil and methane gas, the city calls itself the “Energy Capital of the Nation.” Gillette ranks as Wyoming’s second-worst driving city. Could it be the truck traffic that affects everyone’s driving? Campbell County had 10.81 fatalities per 100,000 people in 2017, which is actually quite low compared to the rest of Wyoming.

Laramie

Located on the Laramie River in southeastern Wyoming, Laramie is the third-worst driving city in Wyoming. Laramie is west of Cheyenne, at the junction of Interstate 80 and U.S. Route 287. With Snowy Range and Laramie Mountains, Laramie brings outdoor enthusiasts from all around the country. It is also the home of University of Wyoming. Could that have an affect on its lower driving ranking? Albany County had 15.65 fatalities per 100k, which is relatively high for Wyoming.

Ranchettes

Ranchettes is a census-designated place in the far southeast corner of Wyoming. Near the junction of I-80 and I-25, it is the gateway to the Great Plains. The western feel of the town gives it a homey atmosphere, rich with history and culture. It also holds the second-best drivers, according to our report. However, Laramie County had 11.19 fatalities per 100,000, which is quite high compared to Ranchettes’ sparse population of around 5,000.
