The following car insurance companies are known for customizing their products and services for veterans and active-duty military.

USAA

USAA was established in 1922 by a group of Army officers to insure each other’s vehicles. Today its low rates and high customer service scores benefit current and former members of all military branches and their families.

Access to USAA’s insurance products is among the many perks of USAA membership. You also receive access to banking services, including credit cards and loans, as well as discounts on products and services ranging from home-security devices to car-care products and even theme park admissions.

GEICO

GEICO provides active-duty and retired military members access to a dedicated support center staffed by veterans. The support team’s military experience gives them an inherent understanding of the needs of active and retired service members and reservists.

If you’re on active-duty, GEICO lets you maintain your vehicle’s insurance in your home state, regardless of where you are stationed or deployed. Beyond car insurance, GEICO’s online Military Deployment Center provides information and links to resources for managing your finances and other matters before, during and after a deployment.

Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual provides auto and homeowners insurance to Navy Federal Credit Union members through its partnership with TruStage.

The platform includes a customized digital shopping experience, priority assistance in a dedicated call center and credit-union discounts on policies issued by Liberty Mutual.

Navy Federal Credit Union membership is available to active-duty members of all branches of the military, veterans and civilian Department of Defense (DoD) employees.

Insurance companies evaluate several factors to determine your car insurance rate. The most important include:

  • Your age and area of residence
  • Your driving record and insurance history
  • Your credit history, subject to state restrictions
  • The make, model and age of your vehicle
  • Safety features of your vehicle
  • Any discounts you may be eligible to receive, in addition to those for your military service

Since insurance companies each place different weights on these and other factors and offer different discounts, it’s best to compare quotes from multiple companies when you shop.

Auto insurance discounts for military members

Car insurance discounts available to current and former military members vary by company, but here are some of the more popular ones.

USAA offers a discount of up to 15% on comprehensive coverage if you garage your vehicle on a military installation. You can save up to 60% if you store your vehicle during a deployment, or for any other reason.

GEICO offers a 15% discount on car insurance to active-duty and retired military, reservists and guard members. The company also offers vehicle storage plans and an Emergency Deployment Discount to those deployed to imminent danger pay areas.

GEICO’s military discounts extend to those in the following professional associations and organizations:

  • Association of the United States Army (AUSA)
  • Armed Forces Benefit Association (AFBA)
  • Navy League of the United States (NLUS)
  • Navy Federal Credit Union

Liberty Mutual offers a discount to active, retired members of the U.S. armed forces and reservists. This discount is separate from those Liberty Mutual offers to Navy Federal Credit Union members through TruStage.

Farmers Insurance offers a discount to current and former members of the military. The discount is available to active-duty personnel, reservists, retired and honorably discharged military veterans.

How do I get my military discount for car insurance?

Car insurance companies typically require you to provide documentation that verifies your military service for your discount when you make your initial payment to purchase your policy, or shortly afterwards.

A copy of your discharge or separation papers, a military ID, a Veterans Administration (VA) ID or a VA healthcare card are among the verification documents most insurance companies accept. Specific requirements vary by company, and you typically do not need to provide verification documents to receive a quote.

It’s important to remember that it is illegal to photocopy a DoD-issued military ID. An insurance company, or any other business, can ask to see your military ID to confirm your eligibility for a discount. However, the company cannot legally make a copy of it for its records, nor can you.

A veterans designation on your driver’s license, available in every state, may also do the trick, depending on your insurance company.

Methodology

Average insurance rates are based on quotes obtained through Quadrant Information Services for a typical veteran in California, Illinois, Louisiana, Oregon and Texas.

The sample driver is a 30-year-old male who is separated from the military and drives a Ford F-150 XL an average of 13,500 miles a year.

Minimum-coverage rates are based on the average price shown in quotes for policies meeting the minimum auto insurance requirements in each state included in our analysis. Full-coverage rates are based on policies with higher liability limits, as well as collision coverage and comprehensive coverage.

J.D. Power’s claims satisfaction scores are based on customer surveys rating insurance companies on their overall claims resolution experience.

Military Friendly workplace ratings are based on veteran recruiting and career development standards established by Viqtory, a private veteran-owned company not affiliated with the DoD. The highest rating tier for Military Friendly companies and organizations is Top 10, followed by Gold, Silver and Bronze.
